A man in Florida was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a teenage girl and hiding her inside a clothes dryer at his home in Key Largo.
Christopher Michael Veit, 53, faces charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment, and sexual activity with a minor, according to a statement from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
The incident came to light when the alleged victim called 911 reporting she was being held captive. Following the call, law enforcement officers responded to a home on Miramar Drive around 11:45 a.m. local time on Sunday and found the teen hidden inside a clothes dryer.
Phone was seized
Investigators stated that Veit had restrained the girl before placing her in the dryer. It is also alleged that the suspect confiscated her cell phone after she said she wanted to leave.
The sheriff's office reported that the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and, after hospital checks, was placed in the custody of a family member.
Ongoing sexual relationship found
Authorities said the girl was not from the Key Largo area, but the connection between her and Veit has not yet been clarified. Investigators also noted they found evidence of an ongoing sexual relationship between Veit and the victim.
Following the incident, the Florida Department of Children and Families was notified. Detectives conducting a search of the home also seized "several stacks" of counterfeit money. The U.S. Secret Service was informed of this finding.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office stated the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed in the coming days.
