73-year-old local artist Rachell Summers was killed in a stabbing in the parking lot of a shopping center in Capitola, California.
The Capitola Police Department announced that the attack occurred near the food court of the Capitola Mall around noon on Monday. Summers sustained multiple stab wounds.
Police arrested 19-year-old Tyler Leibelt in connection with the incident. Leibelt faces several serious charges, including murder.
Authorities said in a statement that the investigation indicates the attack was a random act of violence and there is no indication the suspect knew the victim beforehand.
Court records reveal that Leibelt may have been previously convicted of a felony, which could lead to a significant increase in his sentence.
Rachell Summers, who died, was a well-known artist who ran the Santa Cruz Art Gallery. The gallery announced it will remain closed for the week following the tragedy.
The Capitola Police Department said, "Our hearts are with Rachell's family, friends, and everyone affected by this tragic and senseless act of violence." The investigation is ongoing.
