Support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party stood at 30 percent in a nationwide GMS poll. The result made the AfD the party with the highest level of support in the survey.
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), remained at 20 percent. GMS recorded this as the lowest level of support it has measured for the CDU/CSU to date.
How other parties performed in the poll
The Greens received 14 percent support, while the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Left Party each registered 11 percent.
Merz’s leadership under discussion
The CDU’s heavy defeat against the AfD in elections in Saxony-Anhalt has renewed debate over Friedrich Merz’s leadership within the party.
While speculation about a change of chancellor has continued for weeks, North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wüst is being considered among Merz’s potential successors.
