OpenAI CEO Sam Altman argued that some of the risks associated with artificial intelligence must be accepted to secure the benefits the technology can provide to people.
Speaking to Politico, Altman said he and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei held different views on AI regulation. He said some negative consequences could be tolerated to benefit from the technology and ensure that people can make their own decisions.
Catastrophic risks are unacceptable
Altman said he did not support an approach aimed at completely eliminating the risks of AI misuse, fraud and cyberattacks. He added that he believed people would use the technology for far more beneficial purposes than harmful ones.
Altman nevertheless stressed that genuinely catastrophic risks, such as the complete loss of control over AI, cannot be accepted.
Anthropic said in a statement to Politico that its regulatory proposals cover only frontier AI models.
