Australian lawmaker Helen Haines lost a leg after a car rammed her twice outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. The 65-year-old remains in critical condition at Melbourne's Alfred Hospital after emergency surgery, with doctors fighting to save her other leg.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attack as deliberate, saying preliminary investigations suggested the Toyota LandCruiser made a U-turn before striking her. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said a bystander restrained the driver, and police arrested a 43-year-old man identified as Brendan Nugent.

Government and opposition lawmakers united in condemning the attack. Albanese called Haines "a thoroughly decent human being," and Opposition Leader Angus Taylor called it "a shocking day for our nation." A joint counterterrorism investigation by federal police, Victoria Police and the intelligence agency ASIO is underway.
