Floods and landslides that began in Nepal last week caused widespread destruction in the country and in China's border regions. Data from Nepal and China show that 1,066 people have died in the disasters, while 4,462 remain missing.
A preliminary situation report issued by the Nepalese government on Tuesday said the floods had affected approximately 1.6 million people in the country. According to the report, 1,050 people died in Nepal, while search efforts are under way for approximately 4,000 people.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority of Nepal listed Rasuwa and Nuwakot among the worst-affected areas. Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan were identified as moderately affected areas.
The remains of 321 people were recovered in Chitwan. The bodies of 216 people were found in East Nawalparasi, 170 in West Nawalparasi and 142 in Nuwakot.

Tens of thousands of women and girls await urgent assistance
UN Women announced that approximately 43,000 women and girls in Nepal need urgent humanitarian assistance following the disaster. Women and girls in vulnerable situations due to poverty, disability, pregnancy, limited access to information and a lack of resources were disproportionately affected by the floods.
A women-led organization operating in the region said pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as people with disabilities, were swept away by floodwaters because they could not escape to higher ground.
Approximately 157,050 women and girls living in Rasuwa and Nuwakot were directly or indirectly affected by the floods.
Sixteen people killed in China
Of the total 4,462 missing people, 844 are foreign nationals. Chinese authorities confirmed that 16 people had died, while search efforts continued for 546 people, including 261 foreign nationals.
