Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a press briefing on Monday that dialogue with the United States on artificial intelligence could produce results benefiting everyone worldwide. Guo said Beijing was ready to continue contacts with Washington on the issue.
The Chinese spokesperson said intergovernmental talks could contribute to constructive China-US relations featuring strategic stability and based on mutual respect, fairness and reciprocity.
First talks planned for November
Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump agreed during their meeting at the White House last week to establish an official framework for the US-China Superintelligence Dialogue. According to the US administration, the first talks under the framework are planned for November.
The framework aims to facilitate exchanges on the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence. It also provides for the establishment of a bilateral communication channel between China and the United States on technology-related incidents.
The role of the United Nations
China argues that the United Nations should play a central role in establishing a fairer and more equitable global artificial intelligence governance system.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said future talks could address intervention protocols for critical threats, including uncontrolled autonomous artificial intelligence systems and the proliferation of cyber and biological weapons capabilities to non-state actors.
