The 250th Independence Day celebrations of the United States witnessed a striking image of the country's struggle with racism. According to CNN, a photo taken on a subway on July 4 and rapidly spreading on social media drew attention to a Black woman sitting alone among masked white supremacist racists.
The person in the photo was identified as 33-year-old mother of two Bernita Bowlding. This frame, while recalling historical periods when Black Americans were banned from using public transportation, has become a symbol of the systemic racism that continues today.
Bowlding's family emphasized that she is not defined by this single photo, drawing attention to the background of the incident.
