MIT Media Lab scientist Canan Dağdeviren performed Âşık Veysel's beloved folk song "Kara Toprak" (Black Earth) at the TASSA 2026 conference, held October 2–4 at the Sancar Turkish Cultural & Community Center in North Carolina. Members of the audience sang along with her.
Among those listening was Aziz Sancar, the Turkish-American scientist who won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry whose name the center bears. Footage of Sancar smiling and following the song drew wide attention after the event.
The conference of the Turkish American Scientists and Scholars Association (TASSA) brought together scientists and academics from Türkiye and the United States this year under the theme of innovation bridges between the two countries in the age of artificial intelligence.
Dağdeviren, an associate professor at MIT Media Lab, leads the Conformable Decoders research group, which develops wearable and implantable electronics that adapt to the human body. She has been named to MIT Technology Review's "Innovators Under 35" and Forbes' "30 Under 30" in science, and was among the BBC's 100 Women of 2023.
