A Turkish delegation visited two leading health research centers in Barcelona to explore new cooperation opportunities for Turkish researchers under Horizon Europe, the European Union’s flagship research and innovation program, Türkiye’s Directorate for EU Affairs said on Tuesday.
The visit, supported by the directorate, was organized in cooperation with the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK), ACCIÓ, the Catalan government’s agency for business competitiveness, and the Leitat technology center.

Bioengineering and theranostics

The delegation toured the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Fraunhofer Center for Applied Theranostics (Fraunhofer CAT), which works with IBEC to speed up technology transfer in health, advanced therapies and bioengineering.
New collaboration and global partnership opportunities in the health field for Turkish researchers were discussed during the visit, according to the directorate.
Day three: genomics and biomedical research
On the third day of the working visit, the delegation visited the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP), linked to Badalona’s university hospital of the same name, and the National Center for Genomic Analysis (CNAG), part of Barcelona’s Centre for Genomic Regulation and one of Europe’s major DNA sequencing centers.
Talks focused on biomedical research, genomics and advanced research infrastructures, as well as opportunities for Türkiye–Spain cooperation, the directorate said. The group also toured laboratories and posed outside the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute on the Can Ruti campus.
