CNN, MS NOW and Politico jointly filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the decision blocking their reporters from entering the White House.
In the petition submitted to the court by the three organizations, they argued that the ban constituted a direct attack on freedom of expression and freedom of the press guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The petition alleged that the restrictions were intended to force media organizations to report in favor of the administration and discourage other journalists from publishing stories the president would dislike. It stated that these practices were causing the organizations irreparable harm.
The media organizations asked the judge to immediately suspend the ban and restore the affected journalists’ access to the White House under their press credentials.
Trump’s statements about media organizations
In a post on his social media account, Trump argued that he valued a free press and that the White House had not launched an attack on the media.
Trump claimed that the “fake news” in the country was entirely coordinated and out of control, and said that the White House had launched an attack against it. Trump also alleged that these reports threatened national security and said that the publications in question should be stopped.
Trump had previously announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were banned from the White House, citing their repeated publication of “fake news” as the reason. Trump had also linked MSNBC’s name change to MS NOW to a lack of viewers and credibility.
Trump had also alleged that Politico illegally received $8 million in subscription fees from the government during Joe Biden’s presidency. Saying that media organizations should not include fiction and falsehoods in their reporting on him, the government and the United States, Trump said that other media organizations could also be included in the ban.
