Colombia ended its diplomatic relations with Iran as of September 19. Colombia’s Foreign Ministry said the decision was taken over national and regional security concerns and in line with the country’s foreign policy priorities.
Allegations against Iran
The ministry cited allegations that Iran is linked to international terrorist and narcoterrorist groups among the reasons for the decision. The statement also listed human rights violations and the need to combat cross-border crime.
Colombia’s Foreign Ministry also cited confirmed attacks against countries that are not parties to the conflict in the Middle East, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the obstruction of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s efforts to monitor the scope of Iran’s nuclear program.
The ministry said these developments had undermined confidence in the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Colombia changes its policy toward Israel
Colombia’s new President Abelardo de la Espriella, who took office in August, reshaped the country’s alliances. The de la Espriella administration accelerated efforts to restore relations with Israel.
The policy shift accompanied a reversal of former President Gustavo Petro’s strong stance on what he described as genocide in Gaza.
