Dismissal follows Trump meeting
Costa Rican Foreign Minister Tovar attended a meeting chaired by Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York. After the meeting, which included representatives from several Latin American countries, Costa Rican President Fernandez dismissed Tovar.
The Office of the President said the issue was not Tovar's attendance at the meeting. According to the office, Fernandez was not adequately informed about the meeting and did not have the opportunity to attend.
Fernandez apologized to the United States
Fernandez spoke about the incident at an event also attended by Melinda Hildebrand, the U.S. ambassador to San Jose. Fernandez said the invitation to the meeting had not been properly conveyed to her and apologized to the United States for being unable to attend.
Speaking about the dismissal, Fernandez said, "Mistakes of this kind cannot be overlooked."
Tovar served for 139 days
Tovar began serving as foreign minister on May 8 after Fernandez took office. Her 139-day tenure made her the shortest-serving person to hold the post in Costa Rica's history.
