The number of West Nile virus cases in Croatia has risen to 15 since the start of the year. The country’s case count has reached a higher level than during the same period last year.
The Croatian Institute of Public Health announced that no deaths from the virus have occurred so far. The institute reported that 10 patients had been hospitalized due to serious clinical symptoms linked to the virus.
Measures to counter the mosquito-borne risk
Authorities called for stagnant water that provides suitable breeding grounds for mosquitoes to be removed from gardens, courtyards and around homes. The use of mosquito repellent spray was also recommended.
West Nile virus had previously been detected in wild birds and crows in Croatia.
