A massive chain-reaction crash involving at least 69 vehicles shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 on Thursday morning, October 1, as dense fog blanketed the bridge over Lake Marion near Santee, South Carolina, between Clarendon and Orangeburg counties.

Officials said 15 tractor-trailers and 54 other vehicles were caught in the wreckage, which happened at around 9 a.m. Initial reports had put the number at about 50 cars before the count was raised. Santee fire officials said thick fog covered the bridge and cut visibility so sharply that drivers had no time to stop.
At the nearby Manning airport, visibility was just a quarter of a mile at the time, and conditions over the water were likely worse. First responders found trucks twisted and smashed, with several vehicles wedged beneath tractor-trailers, and crews worked to free motorists from four entrapments. Because fire engines could not reach parts of the jammed bridge, firefighters had to carry equipment by hand.

One person was flown to a hospital by helicopter, at least two were seriously injured and around 11 others suffered minor injuries. No deaths were reported.

Video recorded from the northbound side of the bridge after the fog lifted shows a crumpled trailer lying on its side and a long line of damaged cars and trucks stretching across the span. I-95 South remained closed between mile markers 98 and 100 for hours as crews cleared the wreckage.
