U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin said on September 19 that investigations were underway into 1,620 cases in which noncitizens voted in elections.
Mullin said 151 arrests had been made as part of the investigations and that approximately 300,000 more cases were under review. The secretary said the number was increasing every day.
Mullin also argued that every vote cast by a person who is not legally entitled to vote effectively nullifies the vote of a legally registered citizen.
Authority to detain at polling places
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security had previously said that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers could detain immigrants without legal status at polling places during the congressional elections on November 3.
New members of the House of Representatives will be elected in November, while the status of 33 Senate seats will also be determined. The Republican Party controls both chambers of Congress.
U.S. President Donald Trump had pledged that every adult American would receive a one-time payment of $5,000 if his party retained its majorities in the legislative branches.
