An unnamed Egyptian source said that no party would be allowed to control the flow of the Nile reaching Egypt and Sudan.
The statement came after remarks attributed to Ethiopian Minister of Water and Energy Habtamu Itefa about building new dams on the Nile and controlling the flow toward Egypt and Sudan.
Egyptian source assesses international law
The unnamed Egyptian source argued that the remarks attributed to Itefa represented a continuation of Ethiopia’s unilateral position and said they constituted a clear violation of international law.
The source also described Addis Ababa’s approach of establishing control over a shared international river based on the will of a single country as unacceptable.
Egypt’s options
The source said the Egyptian state had a range of comprehensive tools to protect its people’s interests in the Nile. No details were provided about what those tools were.
Egypt reiterated that it would not accept any party controlling the flow of Nile waters to the downstream countries of Egypt and Sudan.
