Die Linke, led by Turkish-German politician Elif Eralp, has emerged as the strongest party in Berlin’s state election held on September 20, marking a major shift in the political landscape of the German capital.
According to the latest ARD projection on election night, Die Linke received 25.3 percent of the vote, putting the party clearly ahead of the CDU.
The result represents a major gain for Die Linke and places Eralp at the center of negotiations over Berlin’s next government.

Die Linke Emerges as Berlin’s Strongest Party
Die Linke significantly increased its support compared with Berlin’s previous election.
The party received 12.2 percent in the 2023 repeat election but has now climbed to around a quarter of the vote, according to election-night projections.
The result puts Die Linke in first place in a Berlin state election for the first time.
Elif Eralp Celebrates Election Result
Eralp addressed supporters after the first projections were announced on Sunday evening, describing the result as a mandate for her party to seek leadership of Berlin’s government.
The 45-year-old lawyer was Die Linke’s lead candidate in the election and campaigned heavily on issues including housing costs, rents and social policy.
CDU Falls to Second Place
The CDU, which has led Berlin’s government, fell behind Die Linke in the election.

Election-night projections showed the CDU at around 20 percent, while the AfD and Greens were competing for the positions behind the two leading parties.
The SPD also suffered significant losses and was projected to record its weakest-ever result in a Berlin state election.
Coalition Talks Will Decide Berlin’s Next Government
Despite Die Linke finishing first, the election result does not automatically make Elif Eralp Berlin’s Governing Mayor.
Berlin’s next government will depend on coalition negotiations between the parties represented in the House of Representatives.
Current projections indicate that a coalition involving several parties may be required to secure a parliamentary majority.
This means negotiations in the coming days and weeks will determine whether Eralp can secure enough support to become Berlin’s next Governing Mayor.
Turkish-German Politician at Center of Berlin Politics
Eralp, who has Turkish family roots, is a lawyer and longtime Berlin politician who has focused on issues including migration, social policy, housing and civil rights.
Her role as Die Linke’s lead candidate and the party’s strong election result have now placed her at the center of Berlin’s post-election political negotiations.
The final composition of Berlin’s next government will become clearer as official results are completed and coalition talks begin.
