Emine Erdoğan called for common global standards to protect children from risks created by digital systems and for stronger accountability for technology companies.
Erdoğan, the wife of the President of Türkiye, made the remarks at an event on children and digital systems held in New York during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Speaking at the event, organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Family and Social Services, the United Nations Children’s Fund and the Office of the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children, Erdoğan said digital safety was not solely the responsibility of parents.
Children are becoming targets of digital systems
Erdoğan said children were being left alone against behavioral experts, designers and neuroscientists focused on keeping them in front of screens. She said this was turning children into the target audience of digital systems.
Erdoğan said research had identified the harms of screen exposure, citing among them the age at which psychiatric medication is used falling to as young as five, the emergence of addictive behaviors and the biological effects of screen use on children’s brains.

Call for platform accountability
Erdoğan said digital platforms should not all be viewed as threats and that opposing technology was not the answer. She said systems that prioritize profit and engagement over children’s welfare needed to be addressed.
Erdoğan said the responsibility to protect children could not be limited to digital literacy, parental supervision or efforts to reduce screen time. She said the issue should not be reduced to individual willpower.
Erdoğan called for common global standards instead of separate national practices, as well as regular monitoring and reporting mechanisms. She also called for greater accountability from technology companies and digital platforms and for them to share equally in the responsibility of protecting children.
Queen Mathilde of Belgium, along with UNICEF and United Nations representatives and the spouses of some leaders, also spoke at the event.
