The United Kingdom has supported a French-Mexican initiative seeking to limit the veto powers of the United Nations Security Council in cases involving genocide and crimes against humanity.
According to a statement from France's Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, 21 countries from the Caribbean, South America and Asia have joined the initiative over the past four months. With the United Kingdom's participation, the total number of countries supporting the initiative has reached 128.
Limiting the use of the veto
The initiative aims to prevent the work of the United Nations Security Council from being blocked through the use of the veto in cases involving the gravest crimes. France's Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs said that a second country with veto power in the Security Council had supported the initiative this year.

Through a joint initiative launched in 2015, France and Mexico called on the Council's permanent members to voluntarily limit their veto powers when genocide, crimes against humanity or large-scale war crimes are committed.
Permanent members of the Security Council
The five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council with veto power are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
