Türkiye and the United States have taken a new step toward expanding cooperation in next-generation nuclear energy technologies. A grant agreement focusing on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and fourth-generation reactors was signed between Türkiye Nuclear Energy Inc. (TÜNAŞ) and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) at the Turkish House in New York.
Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar attended the signing ceremony as part of his engagements in the United States. The agreement was signed by TÜNAŞ General Manager Necati Yamaç and USTDA Deputy Director Thomas Hardy.
Under the agreement, the feasibility of next-generation nuclear technologies for Türkiye will be evaluated comprehensively, including their technical, economic and regulatory dimensions. The initiative is expected to contribute to Türkiye’s assessment of SMRs and fourth-generation reactor technologies as potential additions to its future energy infrastructure.

Bayraktar: We are determined to diversify our energy mix
Following the signing ceremony, Bayraktar said the agreement would enable Türkiye to comprehensively evaluate the applicability of new-generation nuclear technologies from technical, economic and regulatory perspectives.
Bayraktar emphasized Türkiye’s 2053 Net Zero Emissions target and its goal of achieving greater energy independence, saying the country remains committed to diversifying its energy mix.
Alongside large-scale nuclear power plants, Türkiye will continue evaluating alternatives that best meet the country’s energy needs as part of efforts to build a strong and modern energy infrastructure.

The agreement signed in New York marks another step in Türkiye-US energy cooperation, with a particular focus on emerging nuclear technologies such as SMRs and fourth-generation reactors.
