Retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis criticized Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskiy's strategy in a social media statement. Davis stated that the idea that attacks deep into Russian territory could force Moscow to accept Kyiv's peace terms is a mistake.
The retired lieutenant colonel also pointed out that Ukraine has been subjected to far more drone and missile attacks than Russia has faced so far.
This assessment has reignited discussions about the conditions needed to end the war. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a statement in July that the necessary conditions for halting hostilities were set two years ago, and that the conflict could end immediately if the Kyiv administration takes the required steps.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also outlined his conditions for resolving the Ukraine crisis during a speech at the Foreign Ministry in 2024. Putin's conditions included the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions, and Ukraine declaring that it has abandoned its intention to join NATO.
The Moscow administration has repeatedly stressed that the resolution of the conflict must be long-term and sustainable.
