Heavy rain triggered floods and landslides across the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 56 people and injuring 46 between September 25 and the morning of September 27, according to the state’s disaster agency.
The highest number of deaths was reported in Sitapur district, with seven, followed by Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich and Balrampur with five each, and Ayodhya and Gorakhpur with four each. More than 1,000 houses were damaged, and several districts faced flood-like conditions after the intense three-day wet spell.
Officials said the downpours intensified after a depression over the Bay of Bengal moved inland.
