American actor Mark Ruffalo, one of Hollywood's best-known faces, leveled a severe accusation at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Ruffalo took to social media to brand Netanyahu a 'maniacal murderer' after the Israeli leader welcomed the dismissal of International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan.
In his post on the X platform, Ruffalo stressed that Khan's dismissal would not erase Israel's alleged war crimes in Gaza. The actor stated: "You cannot escape justice. You cannot influence history either. You are a maniacal murderer, Benjamin Netanyahu. You will always be remembered this way."
The Dismissal of Karim Khan
ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan had requested arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in May 2024. Following sexual harassment allegations against him, Khan voluntarily went on leave in May 2025. An independent panel appointed by the court concluded in March after its review that it had found 'no misconduct or violation of duty'.
However, on June 8, the Bureau of the Assembly of States Parties of the ICC decided during its meeting that Khan had 'seriously abused' his position and temporarily suspended him. For a final decision, a secret ballot was held on July 24 in the Assembly of States Parties, where it was announced that by an absolute majority, Kerim Khan was found to have committed 'serious misconduct and breach of duty' and was dismissed under Article 46 of the Rome Statute.
Khan's lawyers, meanwhile, argued that they were denied the right to defense and accreditation during the voting process, and that the process was unlawful and procedurally unfair. Karim Khan was elected ICC Chief Prosecutor in February 2021 and took office on June 16, 2021 after taking the oath.
