An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and wounded a man in his car in the Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday afternoon while a 5-year-old child sat in the back seat, officials said. The shooting happened shortly after 4 p.m.
The Department of Homeland Security said officers were conducting a "targeted enforcement operation" to arrest a man from the Dominican Republic with a prior criminal conviction. "During the incident, an ICE officer discharged his weapon and the criminal illegal alien was injured," DHS said, adding that officers provided immediate aid. ICE later alleged the 28-year-old was associated with the Trinitarios gang and had been arrested by the NYPD in December 2023 before being released.
The man was taken to a hospital in Inwood with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, including a graze wound to the neck. The child was physically unharmed. A worker nearby, Pedro Almarez, told the Associated Press he heard gunshots and saw three or four cars with officers in ICE gear. The FBI and Homeland Security Investigations assisted at the scene.

Mamdani: "Get ICE out of our neighborhoods"
"This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation," Mamdani wrote, saying early reports indicated agents surrounded the man and the child in the car before firing multiple rounds. "I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities," he said, ending his statement with "Abolish ICE."
Mamdani later called the shooting "an outrage," saying "ICE undermines public safety," and said he was in talks with Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin about the man’s release. Gov. Kathy Hochul called for "full transparency" and urged authorities to halt ICE operations in New York, while Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said "a father picking up his child was shot by a rogue agency."
Protesters block ICE vehicles
Crowds gathered at the scene within hours. Videos show protesters trying to block vehicles carrying federal agents from leaving, and an ICE SUV pushing through demonstrators standing in its path.
Hundreds later rallied outside the Inwood hospital where the man was being treated. Video from the protest shows Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 13th Congressional District, being knocked to the ground near a police barricade as NYPD officers and protesters shoved over the barriers. At least two people were detained.
Federal immigration agents have shot at least 21 people since President Trump returned to office, seven of them fatally, according to the Associated Press.
