Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it intercepted and destroyed a US MQ-9 drone over the Strait of Hormuz early Tuesday, according to the Fars news agency. The Guard claimed it was the 54th US MQ-9 it has brought down. There was no immediate US comment on the claim.
The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks across the region and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, and Washington later imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding in June on freedom of navigation in the strait, but its implementation has stalled over disagreements on security arrangements in the waterway.
