New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani hit back at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after Netanyahu singled him out in his September 24 speech to the UN General Assembly.
“As he has done time and again, Prime Minister Netanyahu used his speech to repeat baseless lies meant to sanitize his genocide of Palestinians. Yet no lie can change the fact that he remains the subject of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity,” Mamdani said in a statement.
In his address, Netanyahu said: “Mr. Mamdani, since you were elected mayor of this city, many Jews no longer feel safe in New York.” He accused the mayor of falsely and repeatedly accusing Israel of genocide and added: “To all those spreading these lies about my country and about our brave soldiers, whether they sit in this hall or in the office of the antisemitic mayor of New York City, I say this: Shame on you.”

Mamdani has said Netanyahu should be arrested and brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague for trial, but that he lacks the legal authority to apprehend the prime minister in New York.
While Netanyahu addressed the General Assembly, Mamdani hosted Palestinian families from Gaza at Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s official residence. Dozens of delegates walked out of the hall as Netanyahu began his speech.
