A judge granted $2,500 bond with GPS monitoring to Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, of Stafford County, Virginia, who is charged with felony destruction of property in an attack on the Iwo Jima statue at Marine Corps Base Quantico.
Police say the suspect used a sledgehammer last Wednesday night to break off the head of one of the Marines depicted in the nine-foot limestone monument, which sculptor Felix de Weldon carved over about nine years in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Prince William County police said the damage totals hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the museum's director said repairs are "likely to be challenging."

A detective testified that investigators quickly developed concerns about the suspect's mental health after his arrest. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued a detainer because he is not a green card holder, meaning he could be taken into federal custody if released. A preliminary hearing is set for January.
