A man was shot and killed on a subway platform in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday afternoon. The shooting happened at about 12:21 p.m. on the northbound E train platform at the 7th Avenue–53rd Street station, which serves the B, D and E lines. The gunman fled on foot north on Seventh Avenue, and no arrests have been made.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was shot once in the chest. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, where he died. Police said an argument between two men began on the platform and continued onto the train, and that they do not believe the shooting was a random act.
“This was evidently a dispute between two individuals that ended tragically,” said MTA Chief Security Officer Michael Kemper. He said the MTA was working with the NYPD to retrieve video from the platform and the train car, adding that “guns have no place in transit.”

Police release images of the suspect
The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspect, who was last seen wearing a red tracksuit, a black puffy vest and a black face mask and carrying a backpack. Anyone with information is urged to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or 1-888-57-PISTA (74782) in Spanish, or to submit tips through the Crime Stoppers website.
“It was like a stampede”
Hassen Pinchback, who was visiting from Orlando, Florida, said panic broke out on the platform. “When the train doors opened, that’s when you heard pop pop pop,” he said. “It was like a stampede.” He said a woman was performing chest compressions on the victim before police arrived.
A tourist from Washington state, who gave only her last name, Miller, said she and her daughter heard about five shots. Her daughter signaled a conductor on another train, who called 911.
