A U.S. military service member was hospitalized Saturday evening after falling while rappelling from the rafters of the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The fall happened just before 7 p.m. during pregame ceremonies for UTSA’s football game against Navy, part of the university’s annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game.
San Antonio Fire Department spokesperson Joe Arrington said one person was taken to a hospital as a “Priority 1” patient, a designation for those who need immediate medical attention. Medical staff treated the service member on the field before he was taken out of the stadium on a golf cart. Officials have not released his identity, the extent of his injuries or the cause of the fall.
“The crowd went silent”
“Once the band started playing, there was a guy that fell down,” witness Adrian Corey told KSAT, adding that the crowd went silent and the band stopped performing. Another witness, Siomara Corey, said: “There was no updates after that other than asking for prayers, but it did not look good.”
According to KSAT, the service member was taking part in the ceremony with three other members of the military. The game was delayed by about 10 minutes.
UTSA: “Deeply saddened”

UTSA said it was “deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the start of tonight’s football game,” adding: “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the soldier who was affected, his family and his military colleagues.” The university shared support resources, including a crisis hotline at 210-458-4140 and the TimelyCare app.
Officials have not said what caused the fall, and no update on the service member’s condition had been released.
