Erling Haaland, who carried Norway to the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the US, spoke to the press ahead of the crucial match against England in Miami. The Manchester City star said this match would be the most important moment of his career.
"This is perhaps the most important match of my life," said Haaland, "I said the same thing before the Brazil game, and the Champions League final was also huge, but right now this is more important than anything we've done here." For the Leeds-born player, facing England carries special significance.
Haaland has scored 7 goals in 4 matches so far in the tournament, already equaling Norway's total goals in all World Cup history (7 goals in 8 matches). The star, preparing for his 64th official match since August 1, credits his peak performance to a special program implemented in the US.
Scientific program implemented in the US
The physical and mental preparation plan devised by Norway head coach Stale Solbakken and Manchester City's medical team was implemented before traveling to the US on June 2. This program helped the player get through an 11-month grueling season unscathed.
"In a season with around 66 matches, rest is essential," Haaland said. "Having a clear mind is very important; jokes and fun are an integral part of my daily life alongside serious training." The players maintained this balance by organizing golf outings in Boston, New Jersey, Dallas, and Miami. After the Ivory Coast victory, Haaland was seen buying a cowboy hat at a store in Texas and participating in rodeo competitions.
Guardiola's warning and rotation
The fatigue management process began last November with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola's statement that 'Haaland is exhausted.' After that, Solbakken implemented a coordinated 'smart rotation' plan with City physiotherapist Mario Bafundi.
Haaland was rested for the first match of the preparation period against Sweden, then saw action against Morocco in New Jersey. After securing progress from the group stage, he was benched against France to be saved for the knockout rounds.
Haaland will face England on Saturday in peak physical condition and high morale. The star, aiming to turn a new page in Norwegian football, wants to prove once again that scientific planning and protecting the key player is the quickest route to the World Cup summit.
