The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced it is investigating a case where a passenger infected with measles put people at the airport and a hotel at risk. Officials reported that the person carrying the case arrived on Cathay Pacific flight CX 884 on June 11 and was present at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel during their infectious period.
Potential exposure times and locations
Health officials stated that anyone present at the Tom Bradley International Terminal between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on June 11 may be at risk. Those present at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel at 5711 W. Century Blvd. between 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. on the same day may also have been potentially exposed.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working with local health departments to notify passengers who sat near the infected traveler on the international flight.
Symptoms and monitoring period
Individuals who were at these locations during the specified times may develop symptoms within 7 to 21 days after exposure. Officials noted that the final day to monitor for symptoms is July 2.
Los Angeles County Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis said, "As measles cases increase, it is important for residents to take steps to ensure they are fully protected," adding: "The MMR vaccine is the safest and most reliable way to prevent measles and protect yourself, your family, and your community."
Sixth case this year
This case is the sixth measles infection reported in Los Angeles County this year. Health authorities warned that the risk of exposure could increase with rising summer travel and Los Angeles hosting international visitors for FIFA World Cup events.
Measles symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, and a rash that typically starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.
