According to prime ministerial sources who spoke to the Italian press, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and U.S. President Donald Trump met for dinner during the G7 Leaders Summit held in Evian-les-Bains, France.
The sources stated that the meeting was a "useful exchange of ideas" and a "clarification" following the recent strain in relations. It was also noted that there would be other opportunities for the two leaders to meet throughout the summit.
The report highlighted that Meloni reiterated her stance on the necessity of Western unity during a major international crisis, and that both parties agreed on this point.
Footage shared from the summit and featured in the Italian press showed Trump saying "I was abandoned," to which Meloni responded, "That is not true. We are always friends."
It was recalled that Meloni and Trump had close political ties before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28. Meloni was the only European leader invited to Trump's inauguration last year.
Following the war, tensions arose in relations, and it was revealed on March 31 that Italy did not allow some U.S. aircraft sent to the Middle East to use the Sigonella Base on the island of Sicily.
