German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke to the German press during the G7 Summit held in Evian-les-Bains, France, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Merz stated that US President Donald Trump informed them about the agreement reached with Iran at the summit, and as G7 partners, they clearly welcomed this deal.
He emphasized that the agreement presents an important opportunity for regional stability and the recovery of the global economy, noting that this is reflected in developments in stock markets and oil prices.
Emphasis on Second Phase and Strait of Hormuz
Merz stressed the need to swiftly move to the second phase of negotiations and called for the Strait of Hormuz to be opened as soon as possible without any restrictions.
He also highlighted the necessity of verifiably ending Iran's nuclear program and reiterated that the peace achieved should be lasting and also apply to Lebanon.
Merz conveyed that he pledged to President Trump their intention to contribute to securing peace, adding that when conditions allow, providing military support to ensure permanent navigation security in the Strait of Hormuz is part of this commitment.
He noted that the first mine-clearing ships had already been sent to the region, but no decision has yet been made in the government or parliament, and the legal basis needs to be clarified.
Ukraine War Also Discussed
Merz said the war in Ukraine was also intensively discussed at the G7 Summit, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky participating in the talks.
He argued that Russia cannot win this war militarily and that the Russian economy is struggling under the burden of the war and sanctions.
Merz stated that support for Kyiv will continue and pressure on Russia will be increased. He shared that he discussed this issue in detail with US President Trump. Merz expressed optimism that Europe and the US will work together to end the war, but added that there is no reason for satisfaction until the war ends.
