A National Guard member and a suspect were wounded late Sunday in an exchange of gunfire in the Eastern Market area of Washington’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, police said.
The shooting happened shortly before 11:10 p.m. on Oct. 18 in the 400 block of 8th Street SE. Interim Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said about seven or eight Guard members were sitting in a van when they saw a fight on the sidewalk and got out to intervene.
Footage from the scene shows police vehicles and crime-scene tape on the street after the shooting.
“He discharged a round”
According to Carroll, a person involved in the fight pulled out a gun. “The National Guard members told the individual to drop the firearm,” he said. “He discharged a round at the National Guard members who returned fire at that suspect.”
The confrontation moved from the sidewalk into a nearby alley, where the suspect fired again. Three Guard members fired their weapons, and investigators have not yet determined whose gunfire struck the suspect.

Both expected to survive
The Guard member was shot in the leg and the suspect in the abdominal area. “Both suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening and are expected to survive,” Carroll said. The suspect is hospitalized in custody. Guard members began rendering aid before D.C. Fire and EMS crews from a nearby firehouse arrived.
Police said they are not looking for another shooter and that there is no further threat to the community. Preliminary information indicates the fight involved people who had been at a nearby establishment earlier in the evening.
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division and Criminal Investigations Division are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
