New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has renewed his criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, arguing that the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) should be enforced.

Speaking to CNN, Mamdani described Netanyahu as a “war criminal” and an “architect of genocide,” maintaining that the ICC warrant should be taken seriously regardless of an individual’s political position.
Mamdani’s remarks come as world leaders gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, bringing renewed attention to Netanyahu’s potential presence in the city and the legal and political debate surrounding the ICC warrant.

New York City lacks authority to arrest Netanyahu
Mamdani has previously said that his administration examined whether New York City could act on the ICC warrant but concluded that the municipal government does not independently have the legal authority to arrest Netanyahu. He has instead called on U.S. federal authorities to enforce the warrant.

The United States is not a party to the Rome Statute and does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction over U.S. nationals or territory in the same way as member states. Netanyahu and the Israeli government have rejected the ICC’s allegations and challenged the legitimacy of the proceedings.
Mamdani’s latest comments have once again brought the issue into focus during UN General Assembly week in New York, where the Israel-Gaza war remains one of the major subjects of international diplomatic discussions.
