Ireland’s 3-0 Nations League win over Israel in Debrecen, Hungary, was framed by a series of silent protests. Captain Dara O’Shea stood at the coin toss with his hands clasped behind his back and did not shake hands with Israel captain Manor Solomon, though he greeted the referee and assistants. The Irish players did not pose for the traditional pre-match team photograph.
During Israel’s national anthem, Hatikvah, the Irish squad stood with heads bowed and hands behind their backs. They wore black armbands which FAI chief executive David Courell said were “in recognition of all lives lost in the conflict.” UEFA had approved the no-handshake arrangement, and Israel was informed in advance.

Troy Parrott, Adam Idah and Jack Moylan scored for Ireland. After his goal, Moylan kissed and raised his black armband. O’Shea pledged his match earnings to Gaza aid.
The fixture went ahead after a four-hour players’ meeting and a majority vote, with reserve goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrawing on grounds of conscience. The teams meet again on October 4 in Bačka Topola, Serbia.
