North Korea's 5,000-ton Kang Kon destroyer has joined the country's East Sea Fleet. Leader Kim Jong Un also attended a ceremony held Sunday in the eastern coastal city of Wonsan.
Kim Jong Un was accompanied at the ceremony by his wife, Ri Sol-ju, and his daughter, Ju-ae. The destroyer was commissioned one day before a joint military exercise by the United States, Japan and South Korea began.
Kim Jong Un signals nuclear retaliation capability
Kim described the Kang Kon as a destroyer designed primarily for offensive missions. Saying that the ship was part of the state's nuclear response system, Kim stated that the next-generation destroyer should deliver lethal retaliation against the country's enemies.
The North Korean leader also said that the country's navy must be transformed into a nuclear-armed force so it can conduct maritime defense and deterrence operations more openly.
Kang Kon joins fleet ahead of South Korea-US-Japan exercise
Pyongyang has long criticized joint exercises by the United States, Japan and South Korea, describing them as rehearsals for war. The Kang Kon's addition to the East Sea Fleet marked the latest step in North Korea's restructuring of its naval warship fleet.
North Korea added its first 5,000-ton destroyer, the Choe Hyon, to the West Sea Fleet less than three months ago.
Pyongyang plans to build larger ships
Pyongyang announced at the beginning of this year that it would build larger warships over the next five years. The plan calls for the construction of two warships larger than 5,000 tons, including vessels in the 10,000-ton class.
