U.S. President Donald Trump shared on social media a graphic showing that AfD came first in Germany’s election. Trump made no further comment on the election results alongside the graphic.
Exit polls showed AfD came first with 44.5 percent of the vote in an election in which 1.7 million voters were eligible to cast ballots.
AfD’s classification
Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, classified AfD as a “confirmed right-wing extremist organization” on May 2, 2025, following a three-year investigation.
Vance criticized the decision
In a statement on the classification of AfD, U.S. Vice President JD Vance said it was highly dangerous to use an intelligence agency to delegitimize a rival political party.
In his speech at the 61st Munich Security Conference, Vance also addressed the debate over German politicians keeping their distance from AfD and said, “There is no place for firewalls.”
