In Arizona's Pima County, scammers exploiting the case of Nancy Guthrie, the missing mother of famous host Savannah Guthrie, have emerged on social media with QR code money requests. The Pima County Sheriff's Department warned the public about this new scam attempt.
In a statement, the department said it was aware of QR codes appearing in posts related to the Guthrie investigation that demand payment. "PCSD never requests money for this case or any investigation," officials said, warning people not to send money to strangers and not to scan such QR codes. They also asked that similar posts be reported to them.
Nancy Guthrie's Disappearance
Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC "Today" show host Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her home in Tucson on January 31, 2026. The case is being treated as an apparent abduction. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos had hinted that no new names were being focused on in the investigation and that there were technological challenges related to DNA.
In a tearful appeal on the "Today" show at the end of June, Savannah Guthrie said that one of the ransom notes sent to the family claimed her mother was dead, and that they needed new information. "Somebody knows something. This may be a new story for you, but it's a pain we live every day. We need your help," Guthrie said, reminding that tips can be made anonymously regardless of the reward amount.
Officials announced that anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie's disappearance can call the Pima County Sheriff's Department at 520-351-4900 or 88-CRIME (520-882-7463), and that digital photos, videos, or doorbell camera footage can be submitted through the FBI's fbi.gov/findguthrie address.
