The Plaza Hotel, one of New York City’s best-known landmarks, will close for at least four years starting in January 2027 to carry out repair and restoration work on its historic facade, the hotel announced on Oct. 14.
“Due to the complexity of this undertaking and significant intrusion to operations, The Plaza Hotel will be closing for at least four years commencing January 2027 while the work is underway,” the hotel said in a statement released through Business Wire. The work will require detailed planning, coordination with stakeholders and compliance with historic preservation requirements, it said, adding that other details of how the work will be carried out remain under review.

Questions for residents and staff
Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, which operates the Plaza, confirmed the plans, according to ABC7 New York. The hotel did not give further details, and it remains unclear how the closure will affect the owners of the more than 100 condominiums in the building and the hotel’s employees.

A Fifth Avenue icon since 1907
Opened in 1907 at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, the 18-story building is known for its architecture and craftsmanship, and its facade is protected as a landmark. It is one of the most filmed buildings in the city, appearing in “The Great Gatsby” and, most famously, in the 1992 hit “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” in which Kevin McCallister checks in using his father’s credit card.
