Florida Republican Rep. Randy Fine said anyone who lied on immigration paperwork to become a U.S. citizen should be stripped of citizenship and deported, after being asked whether that standard should also apply to first lady Melania Trump and billionaire Elon Musk.
"Anyone who was not honest in their immigration paperwork," Fine said in an interview with NewsNation's Nichole Berlie. "I believe anyone who lied on their paperwork to become a citizen should be denaturalized and should be deported."
Fine added that he did not know the circumstances of Melania Trump's or Musk's immigration proceedings and was not aware of any allegations against either of them.

'Ilhan Omar needs to be the first'
The question came as Fine pressed for scrutiny of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who is the subject of a federal criminal investigation into her immigration and naturalization paperwork. Federal agents searched her Washington-area home on Oct. 12. Omar has not been charged and has denied wrongdoing.
Fine called for a review of everyone naturalized since 1990, saying he believes citizenship fraud is widespread in Minnesota. "So yeah, I think Ilhan Omar needs to be the first. She certainly should not be the last," he said.
What is known about Melania Trump and Musk
Melania Trump, who was born in Slovenia, became a U.S. citizen in 2006. In 2016, the Associated Press reported that she had been paid for at least 10 modeling jobs in the United States in 1996 before she received a work visa. At the time, she released a letter from an immigration lawyer saying she had followed the law.
Musk, who was born in South Africa, became a naturalized citizen in 2002. The Washington Post reported in 2024 that he had come to the U.S. on a student visa and left school to start a company. Experts cited by fact-checkers have said there is no evidence that he lied on his paperwork, and he faces no formal accusation.
Revoking citizenship requires a court process. The Trump administration has stepped up denaturalization efforts as part of its broader immigration crackdown.
