The Senegalese government canceled the private plane that was to bring the national team back from the US after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, causing chaos for the 'Lions of Teranga' on their return journey.
According to a report by Senegalese media outlet Dsports, the players and technical staff went to the airport at the scheduled time but, despite waiting for hours, could not find a plane assigned to them. The squad then had no choice but to return to the hotel.
A source speaking to Dsports said, 'The players went to the airport, but after hours of waiting, they eventually returned to the hotel because there was no suitable flight.' The source added that some players made their own way individually to their countries or other destinations, while others remained at the hotel awaiting alternative flights.
Dsports reported that the decision to cancel the private plane was taken by government officials. This marked a departure from the practice during Senegal's participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, when the state covered all logistical costs for the squad's return.
According to Dsports, the crisis further heightened existing tensions between the Senegalese Ministry of Sports and the Senegalese Football Federation due to administrative and contractual disputes. The two bodies are reportedly planning to prepare separate reports on the national team's World Cup performance and submit them to the presidency and prime minister's office.
Senegal had been eliminated from the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32 after a 3-2 defeat to Belgium, suffering the disappointment of an early exit from the tournament.
