The US national team beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the 2026 World Cup round of 32 to advance to the last 16. Despite having a player sent off, the US won a World Cup knockout match for only the second time in their history.
The US previously beat Mexico 2-0 in 2002. With this victory, the US earned their third win in the current tournament, equaling their most wins in a single World Cup.
Bosnia and Herzegovina have now lost all four World Cup matches in which they fell behind. This match was also the third World Cup encounter where a CONCACAF team knocked out a European side in regular time.
A historic night for Balogun: goal and red card
US striker Folarin Balogun scored his third goal of the tournament, achieving a notable feat. Balogun became the third player to score three or more goals in a World Cup for the US. Previously, Bert Patenaude (4 goals) in 1930 and Landon Donovan (3 goals) in 2010 had accomplished this.
However, Balogun also made history by receiving a red card in the same match. He became the fourth player to score and be sent off in a World Cup knockout stage match, following Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldinho, and Garrincha.
Tillman's free-kick goal and the set-piece impact
Malik Tillman became only the second US player to score a direct free-kick goal in a World Cup, after Eric Wynalda against Switzerland in 1994. The US have scored four goals from set-pieces in this tournament, more than any other team.
Statistical notes from McKennie and Dzeko
Midfielder Weston McKennie completed 5 line-breaking passes against Bosnia and Herzegovina, taking his tournament total to 13. He has at least four more than any other player in this category.
Bosnia captain Edin Dzeko, at 40 years and 106 days old, became the oldest outfield player to appear in a World Cup knockout match. It is the first time a player over 40, excluding goalkeepers, has featured at this stage.
