Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced his resignation in a public address on Sunday evening, ending his second and final five-year term early. Vučić, who is barred by the constitution from seeking a third term, said he would lead his ruling Serbian Progressive Party in the early parliamentary election on October 25 in a bid to become prime minister.
Under Serbia’s constitution, National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabić will perform the duties of president for up to three months, and a presidential election must be held within that period. Vučić said more than a month would pass between the parliamentary vote and the calling of the presidential election.

In the same address, Vučić announced pardons for 49 people, including 12 activists and students from the so-called Novi Sad group led by Mila Pajić, who faced charges of undermining the constitutional order, and 11 people involved in incidents against protesters.
Serbia has been rocked by nearly two years of anti-government protests that began after a railway station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad in November 2024, killing 16 people.
