An unpermitted neighborhood gathering in Trenton, New Jersey, ended in a shooting in the early hours of Sunday. Two people were killed and nine were injured.
Police were dispatched to the Wilbur section of East Trenton at 12:25 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of multiple gunshots. The office of Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora said a total of 11 people were struck by gunfire during the incident.
More than 200 people attended the gathering in the residential area. Gusciora said one of those killed was a man who had recently been recognized for efforts to reintegrate him into society after his release from prison.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force took over the investigation. Gusciora announced that proactive measures would be implemented to prevent large, unpermitted gatherings in residential areas in the future.
Authorities urged anyone with photos, videos or social media posts that could help identify the attackers to provide information to police. The mayor also appealed to the community: “If you know something, say something.”
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill was briefed on the incident, while state Attorney General Jennifer Davenport remained in close contact with investigators. It is not known what triggered the dispute that preceded the shooting, and no arrests have been made so far.
