Chelsea secured a 4-3 victory over Brighton in the second week of the Premier League. The London side won its second league match in a row, while Brighton suffered its first defeat.
Chelsea score three goals in the first half
Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, whose transfer was announced that morning, made his first appearance for Chelsea. Enzo Fernandez, whose transfer to Manchester City has been the subject of speculation, was left out of the squad for this match after also missing Thursday's League Cup game.
Turkey international Ferdi Kadıoğlu, who is attracting interest from Manchester United and Manchester City, was named in Brighton's starting lineup.
The hosts took the lead through Romeo Lavia in the fourth minute. Joao Pedro's header from a corner struck Mats Wieffer. After a misunderstanding between Wieffer and goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, Lavia sent the loose ball into the net.
Chelsea doubled its lead in the 13th minute. Pedro Neto turned Morgan Rogers' cross from the left into a goal with a low shot through the Brighton defense.
Joao Pedro came to the fore in the 32nd minute to make it 3-0. After controlling a ball carried into the box by Jorrel Hato from his own half, Pedro found the net.
Brighton responded three minutes later. Charalampos Kostoulas entered the box after receiving Malick Yalcouye's pass, but his shot was parried by Martinez. Yalcouye followed up and sent the ball into the net via the far post.
Brighton fight back but cannot equalize
Both teams created scoring opportunities early in the second half. Pedro and Palmer missed chances for Chelsea, while Diego Gomez was unable to capitalize on an opportunity for Brighton.
Brighton reduced the deficit in the 63rd minute through Pascal Gross. Gross met Yalcouye's pass on the right side of the box and struck the ball, which hit Pedro, changed direction and went into the net.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso brought Reece James, Joshua Acheampong and Moises Caicedo, who had recovered from injury, on in the 68th minute. Palmer received Pedro's pass on the edge of the box in the 74th minute and scored Chelsea's fourth goal with a powerful low shot.
Gross scored again for Brighton with a header in the fifth minute of stoppage time, making it 4-3. No further goals were scored, and Chelsea left the field as winners.
Alonso explains the importance of the victory
Speaking after the match, Xabi Alonso said he was pleased with the victory. Alonso described the win as valuable against an opponent that had caused them difficulties in recent years, adding that the team had done many things well but also had areas to improve.
Alonso said he was happy with Pedro Neto's performance but could not guarantee that the players would remain at the club. He said Neto had produced a strong display with his high energy, effectiveness in one-on-one situations and runs into the box.
Responding to a question about Chelsea's low possession percentage, Alonso noted that his side had been 3-0 ahead after the first 30 minutes. He said they had focused on protecting their advantage rather than continuing to play in the same way, adding that the team's performance and areas for development mattered more than the data.
Alonso also commented on Emiliano Martinez playing on the day his transfer was announced, saying that the Argentine goalkeeper was experienced and felt ready. Alonso said Martinez had arrived at the training facilities 48 hours earlier and had the qualities needed to build a positive connection with the team.
Hürzeler praises Brighton's response
Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler said his players had shown character despite falling 3-0 behind. Hürzeler said they had maintained their belief in their quality, created numerous opportunities and found chances to equalize after making it 3-2.
Hürzeler said they had failed at times to find the right balance between defensive organization and controlling the game. He added that he viewed Brighton's creation of numerous chances against Chelsea and its possession during many stages of the match positively.
Addressing transfer rumors surrounding Ferdi Kadıoğlu, Hürzeler said it was normal for successful clubs' players to attract interest. He said both Brighton and the player knew Ferdi's value to the club and added that he was relaxed about the situation.
Hürzeler also said the individual quality of Palmer, Rogers and Joao Pedro had proved decisive for Chelsea at certain moments. He added that Brighton needed to improve the balance between controlling the game, defensive solidity and dominance.
Tuchel and Ancelotti watch the match from the stands
England manager Thomas Tuchel and Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti watched the match from the stands. Tuchel and Ancelotti had previously managed Chelsea.
