Soft Cell has announced their sixth and final studio album, Danceteria. The band dedicated the album to instrumentalist Dave Ball, who passed away in 2025.
The lead single, sharing the album's name, has also been released. The record will be released on September 25 under the Republic of Music label.
The album features 12 new tracks plus two bonus songs exclusive to the CD
Danceteria will consist of 12 new songs. The CD version will include two additional bonus tracks.
The album is named after the famous New York club and serves as a tribute to the city's early 1980s dance music scene. This era coincides with the years that inspired the band's creative process and when they recorded their debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret.
The album is described as a farewell to Ball, with recordings completed just two days before his death.
Marc Almond discusses New York's influence on the band
Soft Cell's lead singer Marc Almond said the band has always had a strong connection to New York. Almond explained that he viewed America through a British lens and that New York in the 1980s was a highly creative period for him.
He described these years as a time of significant changes both in his personal life and in the city's structure. New York opened new possibilities for Soft Cell, shaping the band’s direction.
The new track evokes memories of nightlife
The released song Danceteria is characterized as an electronic dance track featuring layered synthesizers, strong bass lines, and dark tones. In the song, Almond revisits memories from Manhattan clubs nearly 45 years ago.
The track blends synthpop with dark wave and disco elements, creating an atmosphere centered around lights and club imagery.
The band continues touring
Soft Cell continues to perform as part of The Generations Tour alongside The Human League and Alison Moyet. The tour's U.S. and Canada leg includes numerous dates stretching from Salt Lake City to Niagara Falls.
The band's previous album, Happiness Now Complete, was released in 2024. It followed the 2022 album Happiness Not Included and continued the band's comeback after a long hiatus.
However, this new phase was cut short by Dave Ball’s death in October 2025. Danceteria thus stands out as both a closing chapter and a tribute in Soft Cell’s discography.
