A 16-year-old student was stabbed and seriously injured in the parking lot of Sachem High School East in Farmingville, on New York's Long Island, as students were leaving school on Thursday afternoon, Suffolk County police said. A 15-year-old boy, also a student, was arrested.
The stabbing happened at about 2 p.m. outside the school at 177 Granny Road during dismissal time, according to police and the Sachem Central School District. The victim was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

Charged as a juvenile offender
Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Department's Sixth Squad charged the 15-year-old with first-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Friday, Nov. 6, as a juvenile offender at First District Court in Central Islip. Police did not release the names of either teen because of their ages.
Authorities have not said what led to the confrontation or what weapon was used. Fox 5 New York reported, citing video, that a fight preceded the stabbing. The investigation is ongoing.
"Our highest priority"
Sachem Schools Superintendent Patti Trombetta confirmed in a statement that "a student stabbing occurred at Sachem High School East this afternoon during dismissal time, requiring an immediate law enforcement response." She said the student was immediately taken to the hospital and that "all our thoughts are with the student and his family at this very difficult time."
"The Suffolk County Police Department has advised the district that an arrest has been made, that the physical campus is secure, and that the department is actively investigating the incident," Trombetta said. "The health, safety, and welfare of our students remain our highest priority as a district. We understand the great concerns this incident may cause within the Sachem community. The district will proactively work with our own security team and the Suffolk County Police Department to address those concerns."
Sachem High School East is one of two high schools in the Sachem Central School District, one of the largest suburban school districts on Long Island.
