Taiwan’s commitments to purchase LNG and invest in a planned pipeline project to transport natural gas from northern Alaska to the southern part of the state have come into focus.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Taiwan had agreed to purchase 30% of the liquefied natural gas produced by the project over the next 20 years. Trump made the remarks at a campaign rally in Wasilla, Alaska.

Trump argued that the commitment would guarantee the project’s success and described it as one of the largest commercial agreements in history.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who also attended the rally, said Taiwan had committed to investing $4.4 billion in the development of the pipeline.

The remarks came after an agreement reached last year between Taiwan’s state-owned energy company CPC Corporation and the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation. The agreement covers the purchase of liquefied natural gas from the project and investment in its development.

The planned system is intended to transport natural gas extracted from remote areas in northern Alaska by pipeline to the southern part of the state. The gas is then planned to be liquefied there and shipped to buyers.
